  29. Here is a discriptive file explaining why .DMS files are no long accepted
  30. at Aminet.  It may also answer your question.

  34.     The DMS archive format is no longer permitted on Aminet since once
  35.      more a virus was found in an archive of that format.
  36.  
  37.      Top ten reasons why the DMS archive format sucks:

  39.     10. All recent DMS versions contain (1.51 and above) contain pirated
  40.         code.
  41.      9. DMS 1.11, the last legal version, does not verify what it writes
  42.         to disk.
  43.      8. DMS spreads boot block viruses.
  44.      7. DMS is all or nothing. You can't view what's inside an archive,
  45.         nor can you extract only one part in the archive.
  46.      6. DMS forces you to split everything up in 880K chunks. Ever tried
  47.         to DMS a 3 meg animation?
  48.      5. It supports no HD diskettes. Even worse, tho, would be if it did.
  49.         Imagine the chaos, "anybody got a HD floppy drive for me to unpack
  50.         that demo?" even from people with tons of diskspace on harddisk.
  51.      4. There is no UNIX/MSDOS/anything version of it. If you got a DMS
  52.         archive on a non-Amiga system, you're stuck.
  53.      3. It decompresses more slowly than LhA.
  54.      2. It compresses worse than LhA. 
  55.      1. It allows for trackloaders. Hey guys, the stone age is over.
  56.         According to my survey, 96% of the users of Aminet have a 
  57.         harddisk, and the *don't* want to reboot 20 times to see 
  58.         10 demos (boot into demo, then boot back into the system). 
  59.         Nor do they want a stunning transfer speed of 20K/sec. Or 
  60.         any diskettes, for that matter.

  65.     -   Many DMS files distribute Workbench files, which is illegal.
  66.     -   DMS sometimes calls an archive OK when you test it, but fails to
  67.         extract it.
  68.     -   DMS perfectly copies all the read errors that were on the original
  69.         disk.
  70.     -   DMS 1.11 has enforcer hits
  71.     -   DMS forces you to chop up everything in 880K chunks. Ever tried to
  72.         pack a 3 meg animation using DMS?
  73.     -   DMS files can't be virus tested on Aminet (LhA files can)
  74.     -   DMS can't be aborted using ^C when it's asking for a disk
  75.     -   DMS files often include all required libs etc. so you get the same
  76.         reqtools.library dozens of times.
  77.     -   DMS files in most cases contain no HD installation scripts.
  78.     -   There is no (legal) file system that treats DMS files like 
  79.         directories.
  80.     -   DMS games and demos can't be started directly off Aminet CD.
  81.     -   People want to use *one* archiver for everything.
